I'm still waiting for this movie to hit Netflix so everyone can start talking about it again because there's literally no end to what I can say about it (but there is to what I can type).
It's a pretty well-recorded fact that this movie failed due to a combination of misbranding, mistiming and missing the point all together. You can find plenty of those articles out there. To sum them up: it was ahead of its time.
I'm not going to act like I know what teenagers were doing in 2001 that distracted them from how incredible this film is. I was seven after all. But 18 years later, it my crusade to make up for lost fans.
Why is this my favorite film of all time? Why am I proud to be a strong female? Why do I strive to stand out in the world? Why am I a drummer? These girls were strong from the beginning, got knocked around by the industry that chews through so many, and used their own power to defy defeat— not to mention the killer soundtrack, stacked cast, innumerable cultural references, and the sweet, sweet early-2000's nostalgia.
